Não desperdice precioso tempo anelando
Por coisas impossíveis, resplandecentes.
Nem fique sentado negligente, sonhando,
Com asas de anjo brotando, iridescentes.
Não desdenhe ser, de uma vela, luz singela,
Nem todos podem ser uma estrela a cintilar.
Mas, na escuridão sua luz singela se desvela,
A brilhar, justo ali onde você se encontrar.
Necessita-se da luz pequenina da vela,
Quanto da radiante luz do Sol, estelar.
E a tarefa mais humilde é enobrecida,
Quando mais dignamente for exercida.
Jamais, talvez, seja chamado a iluminar,
Em país longínquo, alguma escura região.
Por isso, cumpra no dia a dia sua missão,
A brilhar, justo ali onde você se encontrar.

Don’t waste your time in longing
For bright, impossible things.
Don’t sit supinely waiting
For the sprouting of angel wings.
Don’t scorn to be a rush light,
Everyone cannot be a star.
But brighten some of the darkness
By shining just where you are.
There’s need of the tiniest candle,
As well as the garish sun.
And the humblest deed is ennobled
When it is worthily done.
You may never be called on to brighten
Darkened regions afar.
So fill day by day your mission
By shinning just where you are.
